by Mrs. Carson (Iris) Castles 27 December 2008 27 December 2008 Before I go on with this writing, I want to take you back to our short honeymoon. We could not take long, for Carson’s father was actually dying of stomach cancer, in fact he died three weeks to the day after we married. When we were making our wedding and honeymoon plans, it seemed we could not make any headway with any of the hotels in Jackson for our brief stop-over. So, we called one of Carson’s cousins, Hugh B. Montgomery, Sr., who at the time lived in or near Jackson, and ask for his help. In no time he called back and told us we were all set for the honeymoon suite at the King Edward Hotel in Jackson. We had it made. We got there, checked in as Mr. and Mrs. Carson Castles and told the clerk we had reservations for the honeymoon suite. We were taken up by a bell hop, or bell boy, and ushered into this room, which held twin beds, oh, oh, this is NOT the honeymoon suite…..no way…a bit flustered, I went directly to the phone with the intention of asking what was going on, when there was a knock at the door and the bellhop or bell boy, said he had made a mistake. We eventually were ushered into the honeymoon suite. Hugh Battles Montgomery, Sr., never would admit to any hanky panky on his part. But, we had our own opinion about that and him. He and his wife, "Daughter", were always some of our best kin-friends, and it was handed down to the children on both sides, and it still exists. Some folk are just made that way. And sometimes the ships that pass in the night, actually meet up and enjoy a visit. "Daughter" was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Hightower. Mrs. Hightower was, before her marriage, Meta Perkins, the daughter of Aunt Tiny, (Louisa Christiana Stiles, who had married a Perkins ) Aunt Tiny was a sister to John Francis Stiles, Carson’s grandfather. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Battles Montgomery, Sr. For being an important part in, and of our lives. Sweetly be, Iris Next -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Back to List of Articles
