Greetings, by Mrs. Carson (Iris) Castles 2 January 2009 Three weeks after Carson and I married, his father died, at home, with cancer. It was a sad time for all of us. All three boys were home and that was a blessing for their Mother, to have them near, at this sad time. Charles was home on leave from the Marine Corps, John home on furlough from the Army and Carson, newly discharged from the Navy and newly married, and, also, at home. Carson's father, Franklyn Lafayette Castles, had been ill for quite some years, and had been in a hospital in Jackson, MS. and in the Touro Hospital in New Orleans,. A ten pound tumor had been removed from his stomach, but it grew back. Mother, Miss Lucy, would cook special dishes for him, on the old home range. We all helped as much as we could. I do not remember too much of the days at this time, as you might understand., under the circumstances. It was spring time, and the country side was "blooming", fresh and green. The garden was planted and was growing, the dewberries were getting ripe, and soon the black berries would be getting ripe. Mother was not much on canning and preserving., but we had some fine cobblers and pies. Thank you, Miss Lucy. Over in the early summer I realized I was pregnant. The family doctor, Doctor "feddie", confirmed it. He was, and always was, the "baby doctor" of Starkville, most all his life, and doctored other aliment, too. Back then most doctors would make house calls. But, as you know, now, not any more. We miss you, Dr. "Feddie" Eckford. On the night of the 30th of December, my water broke about eight o'clock. Carson was at an "on the farm training" class, provided by the government for honorably discharged veterans, who wanted to learn how to farm, Miss Lucy, my mother-in-law and John were down to the Charlie Hartness home playing rook, with Charlie and Miss Jennie Lou. Yep, here I am, alone, sitting on our chamber pot, in front of a wood fire, giggling and poking at the fire in the fireplace. Oh, yes, I called down to the Hartness home and told them, but, suggested they not hurry home, for Carson would be home soon, and he was. We took off for Dr. "Feddie's" office, and he met us there. Told me to walk, and so I did, around and around his office. Our first born, a son, Frank, Jr. arrived at 12:30 the morning of the 31 of December. Pity he did not wait another few hours, huh? Then, just about as soon as I was settled in, and Carson had gone on home, another woman came in, she, too was in labor. A Mrs. Hulet Anderson, whose husband ran the Firestone Store on Main Street, at the time, and later was to move his family out to and into the Sessums Community, and later we all became fast friends. Her firstborn, a son, was born that same day. More on this in a later missive. Gently be, Iris B.
