  • This site provides information gathered from many sources about our military heritage. While the initial focus is heavily weighted to the Civil War, it is that war that most affected our lives and futures in Oktibbeha County. Even so, we continued to serve with honor to this very day and we hope to reflect that in the resources we make available to you on this site. The Civil War Rosters come from the Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers who served in Organizations from the State of Mississippi and also those raised directly by the Confederate Government and other information we have obtained to make available to you. The rosters are not true snapshots in time. They are a list of all soldiers who served in units raised in and around Oktibbeha County during the war. We have also listed some contributions from the community that enhance our holdings for the genealogy researcher.
You will find over 200 names associated with some of the companies in the compiled records although at any given time there may well have been fewer than 100 men present for duty. Generally, the company was mustered into service with 100 or more men. As men became sick and wounded, replacements were recruited over time and eventually replaced them. In the later stages of the war the replacements were few and far between and many of the companies slipped so far down in strength they were combined with other companies to for a single unit large enough to to the job.

As a compiled list, there are redundant names, duplicate names, misspellings, and other types of errors. Some attempt has been made to recognize the duplications prior to providing you the information however, at the end of each roster is a list of names that are or were considered as possible duplicates. As you review the list to find your soldiers make sure you check the body of the roster and the duplicate names list below. Any name that appears on either part of the roster indicates there is a microfilm index card on file for that specific identity.
