<> P.T.L. <> Good Morning from Red Acre There have been many dogs here on the place over the years. A few I can recall the names of, but, some I cannot. Maybe, some of the children can remember some of their names. Of course, Bruno, was the first. The others came later. Bruno, finally left home and took up with a friendly female over at Flem ane Mary Blankenship’s home and had a liattler or two by her. We went and brought him back home, and he stayed awhile, then he was gone again, and you guessed it, back over to Flem’s home he went and so we, then, just left him there. Good bye, Bruno. The Dossie Bell family lived on the place and worked for Carson, had been on the place for years working for Carson’s parents. Lena started to work for Mrs. Lucy when she, Lena, was about 16 years old. I assume that she married Dossie ("Eck" as we knew him), when she must have been about 16 years old. They, too, had dogs, and most every family, Black or White, had yard dogs. Soon after coming up here, I had an occasion to go to the milk barn at milking time, in the late afternoon, and was duly surprised and frightened when a dog jumped me from behind and hit me about my shoulder blades, no harm done, it just frightened the dickens out of me. I do not know for dead sure, but, I never saw that dog again. I have a sneaking idea it was one of Eck’s family’s dogs and they killed it for jumping on Miss Iris. Yard dogs, as such, come and go. The only problem ones were the stray dogs that ran in packs. With dairy cattle one had to be careful, for dogs will chase cows, try to catch their tails, and you will hear the cows bawling all over the place, then the bull gets in the act. That is when the owner has to get out and "do something". Usually a shot or two from a double barrel shotgun will scatter the marauders. Usually, they would regroup and go hunt another farmer’s cows to mess with. One of our neighbors came once and a dog was killed, no more "cow chasing", for a good while. Sure, one hates to kill a dog, being as how they are and have always been considered "mans’ best friend". Sometimes, they just turn "wild" and have to be dealt with in that manner. No two ways about it. For milk was a dairyman’s livelihood. And, that, you dare not mess with, no, not at all.
