Mayhew Mission was established about 1820 by Cyrus Kingsbury, a
missionary born in New Hampshire but moved here from Massachusetts. The Mission at one time had a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, and a boarding school for the Indians. First missionaries included Cyrus Byington, Calvin Cushman, David Wright, and Araunah Bardwell. Most moved on and established other missions in the county.
