Chadwick Killed by Johnnie Brown Died 08/03/1926 W. A. Chadwick, tenant farmer on the W. G. Barner plantation about three and one-half miles northeast of Ruleville, was shot and instantly killed at about nine o'clock Tuesday morning by Johnnie Brown, a near neighbor and tenant on the same place. It is said that some ill feeling had existed between the two men, however, this seemed to have been of a trivial nature, and not sufficient to provoke a tragedy. The Barner place is being managed by Will Britt; and Chadwick, who is about fifty-five years of age, with his sons, were walking over the place and at the time of the killing, it is said were with Britt at a blacksmith shop. Brown came up to where they were with a gun, and casually asked one of Chadwick's sons if he did not want to go kill some rabbits? Young Chadwick declined, and Brown turned to go. According to reports, he walked a few paces, and turning around, he fired one shot at Chadwick, killing him instantly. Brown then proceeded to Drew, and gave up to officers. Brown is said to be between thirty and forty years of age, is married, with no children. Chadwick was married and had five children. Both men were regarded as good tenants. Chadwick was said to have been an exceptionally good man. His remains were buried Wednesday in Drew Cemetery. Brown will very likely be accorded a preliminary hearing at an early date.
