Gholston, Lafayette Edwone - 87 of Starkville, retired State Soil Specialist for the Mississippi State University Cooperative Extension Service, died at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Columbus, MS on August 9, 2006. Visitation is scheduled prior to the service from 10-11:30 a.m. on August 11 in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Funeral Services are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Friday, August 11, 2006 in the First Baptist Church Chapel. Services will be officiated by Rev. Clifton Curtis. Burial will be in Memorial Park Gardens. The family requests that memorials be made to the First Baptist Church or the MDL and Saphronia Alice Gholston Endowed Scholarship Fund at Mississippi State University. He was the oldest child of Marcus D. Lafayette Gholston and Sophronia Gholston. Mr. Gholston was a graduate of MSU with advanced degrees in Chemistry and Agronomy. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in the European Theater. He was a member of the elite VFW division, Forty and Eight and a active member of the VFW serving as Quartermaster for the Stoy-Nash VFW f or nearly twenty years. He began his career at MSU as an Instructor in the Agronomy Department and in 1948 accepted a position with the Extension Department. He established the Soil Testing Department and for over thirty years was the Head of Soil Testing for the State of Mississippi. He was a member of various organizations and was a Master Mason with fifty years of service. He was a staunch supporter of the MSU Bulldogs and a member of the Maroon and White Bulldog Club. An avid supporter of the Diamond Dogs he was well known figure figure in the Left-Field Lounge area. He and his wife were Patrons of Excellence at MSU. He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Vadie Lorene LeCroy Gholston and his brothers, S. Bulich Gholston and Marvin Gholston. He is survived by his son, Robert Edwone Gholston and his wife, Nanette of Starkville; daughter, Patricia Rowland and her husband Edward of Senatobia; three grandsons, Robert Matthew Gholston, Wesley Stephen Crawley, and John Nasif Gholston; sister, Lula B.
