January 26 1941 Charter Member of UDC Passes Mrs. Martha M. Mathews, 82, was Mother of Mrs. John McIlwain Funeral services for Mrs. Martha Maxwell Mathews, 82, prominent Starkville matron, were held in Starkville, Wednesday, conducted by Dr. J. R. Countiss, Methodist pastor and interment was at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Starkville. Mrs. Mathews was the wife of A. J. Mathews of Starkville. She was born in Kosciusko, September 7, 1859, the daughter of I.W.(Issac Winston) and Minerva Sanders Maxwell. Her death followed a critical illness of a few days. Mrs. Mathews had been prominent in church and social activities of Starkville, and was a charter member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Surviving, besides her husband, are three daughters and three sons: Mrs. C. C. Hawkins of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Mrs. A. Z. Sanders of Starkville, Mrs. John McIlwain of Artesia; W. M. Mathews of Charleston, MO, A. J. Mathews, Jr., of Russellville, Ark., and F. L. Mathews of Hattiesburg, also a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren. The concourse of friends attending the obsequies and the beautiful floral offerings were eloquent of the fullness of her long and useful life. Servicing as pallbearers were: Active, W. M. Clardy, W. McIlwain, W. H. McIlwain, J. L. Tomlinson, Alex Ames, Walter Page, Will Pierce, W. P. Valentine, H. H. Reynolds, R. K. Weir, George Turner, Augustus Magruder. The ladies in charge of the flowers were Mrs. J. F. Puller, Mrs. W. M. Clardy, Mrs. Ledyard Reynolds, Mrs. W. A. Hogan, Mrs. Hadie Beverly, Mrs. George McInvale, Mrs. E. M. Hall, Mrs. Virgil ______.
