Friday, February 10, 1928 Mr. J. E. McCreight Called By Death (James Edwin) Oct. 15, 1862 Feb. 2, 1928 Mr. J. E. McCreight, aged 66 years, one of Oktibbeha County's largest planters and most prominent citizens, died at his home on Greensboro street in this city, on Thursday, February 2nd, following a lingering illness. Just a week before, a brother, Mr. S. H. McCreight, had passed away. Funeral services for the deceased took place Friday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the family residence in the midst of a large concourse of friends and relatives. The services were conducted by Rev. V. C. Curtis, pastor of the Starkville Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. R. A. Tucker, of the First Methodist Church of Columbus, and Rev. J. D. Ray, of the Starkville Baptist Church, who paid fine tributes to the life and character of the deceased. Interment was in Odd Fellows Cemetery and the new made grave was covered with beautiful floral offerings. The following acted as pallbearers: Active--W.H. Gunn, R. D. Scott, R. C. Bridges, Wirt Carpenter, C.R. Stark, B.M. Walker, Jr. Honorary--Dr. J. W. Eckford, R.R. Bell, John Critz, D.E. Slaughter, W. W. Scales, J.C. Ward, McD McIlwain, T. G. James, P. G. Sudduth, A. C. Hogan, S. Foster, F. Richey. Besides his widow, who before her marriage was Miss Bessie Alston, the deceased is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Earl Cox of Columbus, and two sons, Clyde McCreight, of Hattiesburg and Walter McCreight of Meridian, all of who have the sympathies of the entire community.
