May 1894 MIMS--Mrs. Susan D. Mims, the daughter of Judge John F. Selina H. Carr, was born in Stokes county, N.C., June 12, 1880; moved to Mississippi with her parents in 1836; professed religion in 1845, and joined the Methodist Church soon after; married to Col. Matthew Mims, March 1, 1849; died May 29, 1894, at her home near Starkville, Miss. Sister Mims was one of the best women we ever knew. She made it a rule never to speak an ill-natured word of anyone. She loved the sanctuary. Though in later years she was not often permitted to attend church, yet her love and zeal were unabated. As wife, mother, daughter and sister, she possessed the graces of a kind of devotion for husband, patient love for her children, child-like obedience for parents, and tender, kind sympathy for brothers and sisters. I have known Sister Mims since 1866, and all this time she seemed to possess as much of the mind of Christ as anyone I ever knew. Her religion was of that kind that springs from a sound conversion, a deep conviction of duty, and a mighty desire to please her lord. She was, therefore, steadfast in conflicts, immovable in troubles, always abounding in the work of the Lord amid disappointments. She lived well; she died grandly. After funeral services by the writer, we laid her body to rest in the family graveyard in Crawford, Miss. We sorrow, she rejoices; we mourn, she praises; and so shall it ever be with her. Home at last. K.A. JONES
