4-14-1970 Osborn Rites Held Monday Dr. Scott Osborn, acting head of the Department of English at Mississippi State University, died at his home on Blackjack Raod Saturday night after a heart attack. Services were held at 10am yesterday from the First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Oktibbeha Memorial Gardens. Dr. Osborn, who was 57, had been at Mississippi State since 1953 and had served as acting head of the department since November. Listed in the "Dictionary of American Scholars" and "Who's Who in the South and Southwest", Dr. Osborn was the editor of the "Mississippi Quarterly", a journal of Southern culture published at MSU. He had formerly served as book review editor and assistant editor of the publication. He was a member and had served in various offices of leadership in the Modern Language Association, the American Association of University Professors, American Studies Association, Southern Humanities Conference, of which he was a part president, the Renaissance Conference, South Central Modern Lanaguage Association and South Atlantic Modern Langauage Association. He was a member o f the Executive Council of the Society of the Study of Southern Literature, and served as chairman of the Seminar on Southern American Literature, Modern Language Association, in New York in December 1968. He was also a member of the MSU Faculty Council. Dr. Osborn, who had written and published widely in American and English Literature, received his B. A. degree from Eastern State Teachers College, now Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Kentucky. Before coming to MSU, he taught at Louisville, (Ky.) Male High School and the University of Kentucky in Lexington. He had recently retired as Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Pauline Osborn; daughter, Mrs. Joseph McCormack of Metaireie, La., his mother, Mrs. S. D. Osborn of Martin, Ky., and a sister, Mrs. Beecher Scutchfield of Ashland, Ky. and two grandsons, Michael Sean McCormack and Patrick Joseph McCormack, both of Metairie. The Rev. Perry Biddle, First Presbyterian minister, officiated at the services. Welch Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
