Rites Held for Phillips Died 10/1970 Funeral services for J. P. Phillips were held Monday afternoon from the First Baptist Church, the Rev. D. C. Applegate officiated, assisted by Rev. Billy Nimmons. Mr. Phillips died Saturday at the Felix Long Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. He was 48. An employee of the City of Starkville, he had been with the City Water Department for 19 years and the last 15 years headed the department as superintendent. Mr. Phillips was a member of the First Baptist Church. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Oktibbeha Post 13 of the American Legion and of the local VFW group. He was a member of Abert Lodge 39 of F & AM. He was the son of the late W. P. Phillips, former sheriff of Oktibbeha County. Mr. Phillips was an active outdoor sportsman and was an area leader in conservation and worked for the development of outdoor recreation facilities. He leaves his widow, Mrs. Betty Taylor Phillips, his mother, Mrs. W. P. Phillips of Starkville; one son, James Porter Phillips of Starkville; and five daughters, Miss Barbara Albritton, Miss Fran Phillips, and Miss Janice Phillips, Miss Ann Phillips, and Mrs. A. I (Becky) Stone, all of Starkville. He is also survived by three brothers, W. E. Phillips and Leroy Phillips of Starkville and William Preston Phillips of Batesville; four sisters Mrs. George Delivorias of Starkville, Mrs. John F. Gray of Sturgis, Mrs. L____Ratcliff of Little Rock, Ark, and Mrs. Robert Barber of El Paso, Texas. Burial was in Oktibbeha Memorial Gardens, Welch Funeral Home was in charge of burial arrangements.
