A Sad Accident Dr. Sam W. Scales - 11/27/1914 Just as the bell of the Baptist church was tolling its kneel for the purpose of getting together the worshippers for Thanksgiving service, a heart rending accident occurred a short distance from the edifice in which a useful life was snuffed out in a few minutes. About ten o'clock yesterday morning Dr. Sam W. Scales was on his way to visit a patient. He was in his auto and had the curtains of the sides down. The M. & O. passenger train was backing down to the depot near the Lampkin street crossing when the doctor attempted to cross. The train was just rounding the curve and before the flagman could signal the engineer, the rear coach collided with the automobile which such force as to hurl it about twenty feet down the road. As soon as possible the engineer put on the emergency brakes but to no avail. The doctor received such injuries that death ensured in a few minutes. Dr. Scales was loved by everybody for his lovable disposition-- was a gentleman of christian character, and his death is regrettable. The funeral ceremonies were conducted today by Rev. T. H. Lipscomb, assisted by Dr. T. C. Wier, Rev. W. S. Harrison and other ministers of the city. The vast concourse of people that assembled at the Odd Fellows ceremony where the interment with Masonic honors occurred, and the many beautiful flowers banked on the new made mound attested his great popularity and friend ship. To the bereaved wife, children, parents, and brothers and sister and other relatives, the News extends it condolence in their sad hour of bereavement. Transcribed by C. L.
